This coffee shop was the perfect spot for me to grab breakfast this morning. They have a full kitchen and made up an amazing blueberry waffle for me. They also serve Paninis and real fruit smoothies. Their coffee is also fair trade certified and tasted great.
Day 3 in Iowa City:
Edit… it’s probably good I don’t live in Iowa city, because I may be on the edge of developing an addiction to the waffles at Grounds for Dessert. Today is the third day in a row I have had breakfast here. On day two, I ventured out a little further out of the norm to get a blueberry waffle with lemon, which was amazing, then today, at the owner’s suggestion, I tried the “Arizona,” which has apples and sweet corn cooked in. Yes. Sweet corn. Yet, this is one of the less unique ingredients on the waffle menu. You could try their “Dean Martini” waffle with pickles and olives or their “Hawaiian” with pinapples and coconut, or if you are feeling like a waffle with a kick, check out the TexMex, with onions, peppers & salsa.
This place is a can’t miss for anyone in Iowa City. Friendly service, great fair trade coffee, and incredible food. I’ll have to try their great selection of paninis next time i’m in town. I will be back.

From their website:

The picky person, better to call ahead and/or always go on an off peak time. I have been a loyal customer since this place opened and have had bad experiences with the service from time to time. This does include the owner as she can give off a cranky vibe. BUT, I do think it has improved, at least for the most part. The last time I was here it was a new girl working the register who I have to believe was not just new, but stoned. She sat staring at the register forever, trying to find the right keys with absolutely no help from the other girl working. They ended up messing up our drinks too.

I’ve not been to Common Grounds in McCall but we have an excellent local roaster in Boise (Dawson Taylor) and they’re great political progressives and environmentalists to boot.

I have been to this coffee shop–it’s my favorite in Iowa City.
If you are ever in Cedar Falls, Iowa, though, be sure to try Cup of Joe on Main Street. They have the best coffee I’ve had anywhere (and I’m a coffee addict who gives directions using coffee shops as reference points). They are secretive about their roaster–they say that’s the reason their coffee is so good. The decor is vintage 50′s and 60′s, and the baristas are helpful and friendly. By the way, thanks for your blog. I’ll be in Denver this week and will try some of the shops you’ve reviewed that I haven’t discovered yet. (E Steamers is my favorite so far.)
Hello my friend,
